Our History
Over 60 years ago Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union opened its doors as St. Andre's Federal Credit Union.
St. Andre's Federal Credit Union was established by Reverend Arthur Decary of St. Andre's Parish in Biddeford, Maine. Reverend Decary felt that many of his parishioners who lived on low incomes could use the help of a new financial institution. He went to Larry Beaudoin, one of his parishioners, for information. Mr. Beaudoin had participated in the organization of a credit union at his place of employment and was serving as its treasurer and manager. The parish successfully applied for its charter, which was received on November 24, 1948, and St. Andre's Federal Credit union was born.
Over the years, St. Andre's Federal Credit Union expanded its field of membership through a series of mergers with local credit unions. St. Andre's charter was eventually changed to a community charter, allowing people living or working within a certain geographic area to join. In 1988, a merger with Old Orchard Beach Federal Credit Union expanded St. Andre's charter and facilitated a name change that would reflect the diverse nature of its field of membership. A contest was held to rename the credit union and St. Andre's became Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union.
Today, the credit union has six branches located in Biddeford, Kennebunk, Old Orchard Beach, Sanford, York, and Westbrook, Maine, and several remote ATM locations. Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union has over 12,000 members and holds assets of approximately $140,000,000, making it one of Maine's ten largest credit unions.
Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union is a non-profit, member-owned financial cooperative. The credit union uses member savings to fund member loans. Unlike other types of financial institutions, credit unions are led by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by the membership. The Board oversees the direction of the organization in the best overall interests of the membership.
Our success is the result of building long-term, productive relationships with our members and our surrounding communities. We encourage members to make Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union their primary financial institution by offering competitive products and services with convenient, professional delivery. We have also built strong relationships with surrounding communities by donating money and resources to local organizations like the United Way, Red Cross, and Ending Hunger in Maine. Ocean Communities Federal Credit Union also developed the People Helping People Campaign, which has raised thousands of dollars for the local community since 1991.
